16th century tower house
Now privately owned, Mercure Peebles Barony Castle Hotel was originally a 16th century tower house built by the Murrays of Blackbarony.
Sitting pretty in 25 acres of lush gardens, the grand exterior still looks like a fairytale castle but the Barony has been considerably altered since then. Not least in the introduction of all the modern comforts which you would expect to find in a 21st century hotel.
There is free WiFi in all of the hotel’s 78 ensuite rooms along with satellite TV and a hot drinks tray.
Guests can enjoy full use of the hotel’s leisure facilities including the thermal spa.
Featuring a swimming pool, heated loungers, experience showers, swan necks, sauna and a spa bath, it’s the perfect place to melt away the stress of everyday life.
The spa also offers a range of beauty treatments such as facials, hot stone massage and manicures. Big Deal bookers enjoy a 20% discount on pre-booked beauty treatments taken during their stay.
The hotel’s Blue Dug Restaurant is a contemporary space which plays with the building’s past history thanks to little touches like the antler light fittings.
Serving dishes from around the world, the restaurant has just been given a Healthy Living Award.
The menu changes regularly but typical dishes include starters such as the wood pigeon on a bed of beetroot and morel mushrooms; the confit duck leg and the traditional prawn cocktail.
Among the main courses, the steaks are always a hit as well as the seared fillet of sea bass on garlic crushed potatoes and steamed greens.
After eating, guests can enjoy a nightcap in the welcoming bar.
Mountain biking fans will know the fantastic Glentress woodland trails are a short drive away. The hotel has mountain bikes which are free for guests to use – perfect for exploring the trails in the hotel grounds.
There is also a games room with a large screen TV, pool table and board games.
Previous guests have been very enthusiastic with the hotel staff often receiving special mention for the warmth of their welcome. This is what a couple of recent guests had to say on TripAdvisor. We’ve cut them for length but not meaning:
‘Excellent. Stayed overnight on Sunday at Barony Castle… Our stay was perfect. The upgraded room was amazing with a four poster bed… The gardens were lovely to sit and relax in the sun. Bar food really nice. Dinner in restaurant in evening was so tasty and well-presented. Wine choice good too. Breakfast was great in the morning with plenty of choice. The leisure facilities were of a high standard with swimming pool, sauna and Jacuzzi. All in all the hotel was so enjoyable and I would not hesitate to return or recommend it.’
‘Excellent visit. Grounds are beautiful and castle looks like a French chateau. Rooms were clean and comfortable and breakfast selection was best I have seen and quality was exceptional. Staff were friendly and accommodating. If you are looking for a hotel a little out of the way put this one high on your list.’
