Not every fitness fashion is successful. Karaoke water aerobics; running marathons while gyrating a hula hoop and synchronised goose-stepping to dance remixes of Czech marching tunes have not all enjoyed the widespread popularity which their inventors may have hoped for.
By contrast, the Latin dance exercise class Zumba has pretty much conquered the world.
Stick a pin pretty much anywhere in the globe and, from Auckland to Aberfeldy, you are almost guaranteed to find a Zumba fitness party in action.
Using musical styles that range from salsa to samba via merengue and bellydance, Zumba combines dance with exercise.
Suitable for all levels of fitness, one of the reasons it has become so popular is that people in the classes are too busy having fun to notice that they are working up a sweat.
Zumba instructor Nadia Alkoch trained in dance before gaining a First Class Honours degree in Sports and Exercise Science.
She now leads some of Edinburgh’s most popular Zumba classes at which everyone is welcome.
Nadia is also launching her own Hooked exercise classes which use martial arts techniques, moves and routines to improve fitness and tone the body.
A non-contact exercise, Hooked is an aerobic class that burns calories but also helps develop balance, flexibility and stamina.
Today’s Big Deal is for five exercise classes of your choosing. Some are for Zumba and some are for Hooked. They all have different start times and locations so you are sure to find classes which suit you.
