The restaurant takes its name from the celebrated Madame de Pompadour, the favourite mistress of King Louis XV of France.

Madame de Pompadour was installed in the magnificent Palace at Versailles and the extravagant, listed interior décor of The Pompadour reflects the sumptuousness of the French royal court.

In fact, the restaurant has long enjoyed the reputation of having the best table in Edinburgh with impressive views overlooking Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle through the panoramic arched windows.

Three AA Rosettes

With three AA Rosettes to its name, The Pompadour is as famed for its cuisine as it is for its dining room.

The restaurant is led by brothers Jeff and Chris Galvin who have earned multiple Michelin stars and AA Rosettes. Acclaimed chef Fraser Allan is the Executive Chef charged with overseeing the brothers’ vision.

The kitchens combine the best of classical French-inspired cuisine with locally sourced ingredients to provide a unique fine dining experience.

Fresh produce

Available from 6pm to 6.45pm and 9pm to 10pm from Wednesday to Friday and Sunday, the offer is for two people to have a five course meal from the seasonal menu plus a glass of Champagne each.

Exact dishes may vary depending on the fresh produce available, but a typical example would be as follows:

Cured & flamed mackerel, tartare, mooli & wasabi

Venison shoulder risotto ‘Bourguignon’

Fillet of North Sea hake, crushed cauliflower cheese, Parmesan gnocchi & jus gras

Roast poussin, braised thigh, pink fir potatoes & Jerusalem artichoke

Set ginger custard, carrot cake, carrot & ginger sorbet

The Pompadour by Galvin has been winning friends and admirers since it opened in 2012. This is what a recent diner had to say on TripAdvisor. We have edited it for length:

‘Outstanding cuisine… The menu options feature local ingredients, with a few notable game dishes (I had grouse, for example)… All of them were exceptionally good. The wine steward was knowledgeable, and offered excellent pairings by the glass that were well suited to the dishes. Sweets were a hit (crème brulée) and a miss (pavé of chocolate). The latter was very flavourful, but somewhat too dense… Service was knowledgeable, attentive and prompt, other than a long delay waiting for presentation of the bill.’
