First opened in 1925, The Pompadour restaurant was the jewel in the crown of what was then known as the Caledonian Hotel.
Almost a hundred years later, The Pompadour by Galvin is still one of Edinburgh’s most iconic restaurants.
While it may be the Grand Old Dame of the capital’s restaurant scene, the kitchen team moves with the times and The Pomp offers classic French-influenced dishes with a contemporary aesthetic.
Experience a spectacular three course Sunday lunch with a Bloody Mary cocktail in The Pompadour by Galvin with this Big Deal.
Best table in Edinburgh
The restaurant takes its name from the celebrated Madame de Pompadour, the favourite mistress of King Louis XV of France.
Madame de Pompadour was installed in the magnificent Palace at Versailles and the extravagant, listed interior décor of The Pompadour reflects the sumptuousness of the French royal court.
In fact, the restaurant has long enjoyed the reputation of having the best table in Edinburgh with impressive views overlooking Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle through the panoramic arched windows.
Three AA Rosettes
With three AA Rosettes to its name, The Pompadour is as famed for its cuisine as it is for its dining room.
The restaurant is led by brothers Jeff and Chris Galvin who have earned multiple Michelin stars and AA Rosettes. Acclaimed chef Fraser Allan is the Executive Chef charged with overseeing the brothers’ vision.
The kitchens combine the best of classical French-inspired cuisine with locally sourced ingredients to provide a unique fine dining experience

The Pompadour by Galvin has been winning friends and admirers since it opened in 2012. This is what a couple of recent guests had to say on 5pm Dining. We have edited them for length.
‘This was more than I expected. Everything about the whole experience was amazing. The room, the view, the service from the minute you entered to the minute we left was lovely. All the staff were brilliant in their role, the service throughout the meal was perfect. Have already booked again for a special birthday treat. Loved it.’
‘If you want a special experience with great quality food, setting and service, try the Pompadour. We’ve been to the Pompadour a few times in the last 12 months and on Saturday took my parents for a significant birthday celebration, just one word needed – Flawless. Thanks to Galvins again.’
