If so, you may have heard of biodynamic wine.
A holistic way of making wine that works closely with the rhythms of nature, biodynamic methods are catching on fast in the wine world and many top wine producers are switching to biodynamic production.
Said to give a more authentic taste of a grape’s terroir, biodynamic wines are a fascinating subject and this personalised, tutored tasting at Bar à vin is a great introduction to them.
Opened in 2015, this West End wine bar is the latest addition to Edinburgh’s family of l’escargot restaurants – l’escargot blanc is just upstairs.
Run by the award-winning Chef Patron Fred Berkmiller, Bar à vin is an authentic French wine bar on Queensferry Street.
With walls covered in vintage French drink adverts and old pastis bottle lighting, it is a quirky spot for lunch, an after work glass of wine with nibbles or a leisurely get together with friends.
Say an introductory ‘Bonjour’ to Bar à vin with today’s Big Deal.
Available seven days a week, from noon to 10pm, the offer is for one person to enjoy wine, cheese, charcuterie and informed but informal wine chat at Bar à vin.
After a welcome glass of Champagne, one of the wine experts behind the bar will talk you through six glasses of exceptional biodynamic wine.
If you just want a quick description of each wine, that’s fine. If you want an in-depth discussion about the wine, buckle in.
The staff at Bar à vin are as knowledgeable as they are enthusiastic and more than happy to chat as much or as little as you want. Each guest will be given a set of wine tasting notes at the end of your tasting.
The drinks will be accompanied by the finest French cheese and European charcuterie served on wine barrel platters.
This offer is for one person. However, it requires a minimum of two guests per booking. Each booking will be a private tasting for your group held at a time which is convenient for you.
Carefully selected, seasonal cheeses and charcuterie from artisan French and Scottish producers will be served with the wine.
Supplied by the famous French firm of affineurs, Hervé Mons, the selection of cheeses served changes every week to ensure they are at their seasonal peak.
Among other options, the charcuterie selection might include ham from Auvergne; pastrami from Highland Wagyu farm in Perthshire or saucisson from Peelham Farm in the Borders.
What all the products offered have in common is a genuine sense of heritage; they are rooted in the area from which they come.
It is not unheard of for some of Edinburgh’s top chefs and sommeliers to swing by Bar à vin after their service is over. The general public have been just as enthusiastic. We’ve edited these recent TripAdvisor reviews for length:
‘Did a wine tasting afternoon here and it was a fantastic experience. From learning a bit more about wines to tasting wines you just don’t get anywhere else it was truly a phenomenal experience. Would whole heartedly recommend this place to anyone and everyone. Staff were also fantastic… The setting is stunning and we will definitely be back! Thanks to the whole Bar à vin team for a fantastic day.’
‘Lovely French wine bar. Extensive wine list, with offerings by both the glass and bottle, complimented by sharing plates of cheese or charcuterie. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly.’
Valid until the end of June 2017, this Big Deal would make a fantastic introduction to both Bar à vin and biodynamic wines.
It would also make a wonderful gift for anyone who appreciates great food and wine.
Although if you have already visited Bar à vin then you may have difficulty giving the tasting to anyone else.
