Romeo and Juliet; Fred and Ginger. Erm… Kanye and Kim Kardashian? Is that still on?
Some people make a great pair. Others may be less harmonious.
Today’s Big Deal celebrates one of the greatest pairings of all time: Champagne and lunch.
Available Monday to Saturday, this sweet offer is for two people to enjoy a lavish three course lunch from the prix fixe menu at the Bistro du Vin in Edinburgh’s Hotel du Vin.
A chilled glass of champagne will help ease you into your lunch and, of course, there is tea and coffee to finish.
This offer would be a lovely treat for a friend or it could make for a luxurious break in a marathon shopping trip. You could even use it for a lunch date with a loved one. Champagne, lunch and then the afternoon is yours to spend as you please.
The Bistro du Vin is tucked away off a beguiling courtyard in Edinburgh’s atmospheric Old Town. It’s a warm, welcoming space with restored fireplaces, reclaimed floorboards and lots of wine merchant memorabilia.
Seasonal & locally sourced
The kitchen team specialise in producing the sort of hearty, delicious cooking that people want to eat.
It’s not fine dining or faffy but it is fresh, seasonal, locally sourced and, wherever possible, created from organic produce.
The chef’s prix fixe menu changes every day depending on what is available but typical starters might be the Merguez sausage with tomato and mint salad or the pickled herring, beetroot and horseradish cream.
Popular main courses from the prix fixe include the pork schnitzel served with braised red cabbage; the sea bass with fennel and clams or the butternut squash fondant which comes with a Puy lentil and feta vinaigrette.
Leave space for desserts such as the treacle tart with clotted cream or the strawberry knickerbockers glory.
This 5pm Big Deal writer is a fan of HdV’s Bistro. I like the cosy feel of the place; the food is hugely satisfying and the wine list, as you might imagine, makes for tempting reading.
I’m not alone. At the time of writing, just over a hundred 5pm Restaurant customers have rated the bistro a healthy 4.2/5. This is what a recent diner had to say about their experiences:
‘Stylish dining. We had been to the Hotel Du Vin earlier in the week and the whole experience was so good we returned within a week, bringing our family with us this time. We were all more than satisfied with the evening. The food was top class and the service was even better than before if that was possible. We are already looking forward to a special occasion in about 6/8 weeks when we will make another return, this time with more friends.’ Rating 4.6/5
