Peeved at political polls? Dulled by debates? Fed up of feuding politicians?
Forget them all for a couple of blissful hours and concentrate instead on today’s Big Deal at Hotel du Vin in Edinburgh’s Old Town.
The offer is for two people to enjoy one of two different lunch experiences in the hotel’s charming bistro.
A jolly chat over a good lunch is one policy which we can all vote for.
Available Monday to Saturday, this Big Deal gives you the choice of two lunches.
Option one is for two people to have a glass of Champagne and a lavish three course lunch from the prix fixe menu at Edinburgh’s Hotel du Vin. Tea or coffee will finish off your lunch.
Option two is for two people to have a glass of house wine with a two course lunch from the kitchen’s new spring menu.
Atmospheric Old Town
Tucked away off a beguiling courtyard in the atmospheric Old Town, Edinburgh’s Bistro du Vin is a warm, welcoming space with restored fireplaces and lots of wine merchant memorabilia.
This offer would be a lovely treat for a friend or it could make for a luxurious break in a marathon shopping trip. You could even use it for a lunch date with a loved one.
Robust, earthy dishes
Inspired by French home-style cooking with robust earthy dishes, and slow-cooked foods, the prix fixe menu is one to savour.
The exact dishes will change depending on the produce available. Typical starters might be the ham hough terrine with a celeriac reduction or a watermelon and feta salad.
Popular main courses include the coq au vin; grilled vegetable spaghetti and the pork chop with roast potatoes and a mustard and apple sauce.
Desserts like the profiteroles and chocolate sauce or the banana bread and butter pudding with vanilla ice cream will bring your meal to a sweet finish.
Sides, such as the pommes frites, wilted spinach and honey-roasted carrots, will be charged at £3.75.
The spring menu is packed with fresh, tasty starters such as Caprese salad – made with Heritage tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and an aged balsamic dressing – or the Bayonne ham with a celeriac remoulade.
Main courses include poached Scottish salmon; a classic steak frites and the grilled globe artichoke served with buffalo mozzarella and preserved lemons – the taste of spring.
This 5pm Big Deal writer is a fan of the HdV Bistro. I like the laidback ambience; the food is hugely satisfying and the wine list, as you might imagine, makes for tempting reading.
I’m not alone. At the time of writing, just over 200 5pm Restaurant customers have rated the Edinburgh bistro a healthy 4.1/5.
This is what a recent diner had to say about their experience at Hotel du Vin in Edinburgh:
