Edinburgh’s Nira Caledonia hotel has refreshingly clear ideas on interior decor: no tartan, no stuffed deer heads and no prints of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Part of a row of gorgeous Georgian townhouses in the New Town, the boutique hotel prefers to blend Bohemian chic with contemporary comfort.
Amid the plush pelmets, rich textures and original cornices, you’ll find flat-screen televisions, Nespresso coffee machines and iPod docking stations.
Warm, heartfelt service and a cool, quirky style are the icing on the cake.
We’re not the only ones who think that Nira Caledonia is the bee’s knees.
It won the Best City Hotel in Scotland award at this year’s Scottish Hotel Awards.

Fresh, Scottish ingredients
As well as a full Scottish breakfast, this offer includes a two course table d’hôte dinner for two in the hotel’s Blackwood’s Bar and Grill.
The chefs use natural, fresh and often organic ingredients which have been farmed, caught, raised or bred in Scotland.
Many of the options make clever use of the kitchen’s charcoal-burning Josper grill which imparts a subtle smoky tang.
The menus change regularly but typical main courses might be the Loch Duart salmon fillet with sautéed potatoes plus a tomato and herb sauce or the pork loin steak served with chunky chips and a wild mushroom and thyme sauce.

‘Outstanding… again! Another fantastic stay at Nira Caledonia! We returned to the hotel for our first wedding anniversary last weekend and were greeted like old friends. The staff for us are what really make this hotel stand out from the rest. Nothing is ever too much trouble, the service is exemplary and the staff are genuinely interested in your wellbeing and making sure you feel at home. The rooms are all beautifully decorated, very tasteful… We love the location of Nira, situated a mere five minute walk from town and Stockbridge in a nice quiet street…’
