Because no amount of daft jokes and silly puns can top it, the introduction to today’s Big Deal at Al Dente on Easter Road comes from a review which Ron Mackenna wrote for The Sunday Herald.
We’ve edited for length but not for meaning:
‘The lasagne is by far the best I’ve ever had in a restaurant in Scotland… Outstanding. The cannelloni-like paccheri are excellent, the seabass puree light and the mussels and king prawns dotted around the plate delicately poached. What a meal.’
2 course Italian
We couldn’t put it better ourselves so, if you want to see why Mr Mackenna was so chuffed with Al Dente, pull up a chair, tuck in your napkin and tuck in to today’s Big Deal on an Italian meal.
The offer is for two people to each enjoy any starter and any pasta main course from the a la carte at the cosy Al Dente on Easter Road.
Authenticity is very important to the Al Dente team and it shines through in starters such as the baked figs topped with gorgonzola and wrapped in Parma ham or the spinach and cheese gnocchi. Alternatively, try the cabbage dumplings with mince pork and mushrooms which come on a bed of mashed chickpeas.
With eight main courses to decide between, we suspect that choosing your main course could be enjoyably difficult. The spaghetti with seafood in a white wine sauce sounds good but then so does the cannelloni stuffed with ricotta, peppers and goat’s cheese.
Alternatively, follow in Mr Mackenna’s steps and try the outstanding lasagne or the house speciality: paccheri al branzino, fresh pasta tubes filled with seabass and served with mussels and king prawns in a light seafood sauce. There is a £4 supplement on the seafood pasta dishes.
A glass of house wine for each diner will provide the ideal accompaniment to your meal.
I’m not going to add anything to Ron’s assessment of the food at Al Dente but, having visited, this Big Deal writer will add that the Al Dente team make for very welcoming hosts. Tucked away around half way down Easter Road, Al Dente may be a little off the beaten path but it is well worth tracking down.
