Self denial is over rated.
We would much rather indulge ourselves with a gorgeous room, fine Champagne and an excellent tasting menu.
If your preferences tend more towards silk shirts than hair shirts, today’s Big Deal from Edinburgh’s No 11 Brunswick Street should be monogrammed on your slippers.
No 11 Brunswick Street is a chic Georgian boutique hotel, just a hop, skip and jump from the Princes Street action.
Part of a terrace of Georgian townhouses, the building was designed by Regency luminary William Playfair.
It combines the grandeur of classic Edinburgh architecture with opulent, contemporary facilities.
Available seven days a week, the Big Deal is for two people to have an overnight stay in a double room.
As well as a continental or full Scottish breakfast, the offer includes a superb five course tasting menu and a bottle of spectacular Bissinger Champagne.
This isn’t any old sparkler but a premier cru Champagne with fresh, intense flavours balanced with a vivid acidity and a long finish.
There is a £50 supplement for Friday and Saturday night stays.
No 11 Brunswick Street has ten individually styled rooms.
Standard doubles are cosy with en-suite bathrooms which feature large double showers or bath with shower over, demisting mirrors and underfloor heating.
The rooms are packed with luxurious contemporary amenities including free Internet access, a DVD player, iPod docking sound system, Egyptian cotton sheets and luxury toiletries.
Depending on availability, there may be the option to upgrade rooms, at a supplementary charge, to an executive room, suite or magnificent Georgian suite.
Willie Lonnie, the award-winning and well respected Head Chef of No 11’s Brasserie, uses Scotland’s best seasonal ingredients, sourcing meats from local farms and fish and shellfish from Arbroath.
The fixed five course tasting menu changes with seasonal availability, but recent highlights have included char-grilled venison steak served with saffron fondant potato, garlic-buttered greens and a red wine jus.
Seafood lovers can look forward to dishes like the grilled Queen scallops with a Béarnaise sauce.
Out and about
No 11 Brunswick is just a five minute stroll from the Edinburgh Playhouse. Over the next few months, highlights include a run of Dirty Dancing, a Ricky Gervais show and a gig from The Illegal Eagles.
