What do you call fake pasta? An impasta.
Boom and again boom!
OK, so the jokes around these parts are as old as the hills.
Fortunately, today’s Big Deal with Papavero in Edinburgh’s New Town is so fresh that it will be asking for your number before it even knows your name.
Papavero has been open for less than a year but has already been winning fans on both TripAdvisor and 5pm where happy customers have been leaving glowing reviews.
Decked out in warm reds and yellows with candles on the tables, it is an inviting space with a menu that offers authentic Italian dishes and Scottish flavours.
A la carte menu
Today’s Big Deal is for two people to enjoy any pizza or pasta from the a la carte menu plus a glass of the house Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Primitivo or, since it is summer, Pinot Grigio Blush.
At Papavero, the a la carte menu is packed with classic Italian pizza and pasta dishes.
The choice of nine delicious pastas on offer include a rich spaghetti Bolognese; squid ink taglione with calamari; pasta parcels with a cheese and pear filling plus spaghetti with fresh local clams and mussels sautéed in white wine, cracked pepper, garlic and parsley.
There are also nine tempting pizza on the a la carte. Choices include the classic quattro stagioni, a spicy piccante pizza and the capo di tutti i capi, topped with basil pesto, goats cheese, sun dried tomato, black olives and chilli oil.
Papavero has been attracting plenty of praise. This first review is from Papavero’s 5pm page. The second is from TripAdvisor:
‘We wanted somewhere central and authentic. Papavero delivers on both together with great service and true value for money. Even the chef offered advice before the meal and joined us for feedback afterwards.’ Rating 5/5
‘One of the best pizzas I’ve eaten outside of Italy. We went on the night of Eurovision needing quick sustenance before the song marathon. It was pretty early and empty. Strangely, we’ve often found that the efficiency of the service is in inverse proportion to the number of diners but that was certainly not the case at Papavero. The service was quick and friendly without being smothering. The ingredients of the pizza were obviously fresh and the patron glowed with pride when complimented.’
‘One of the best pizzas… outside of Italy’ is about as good as compliments get.
