Lunch at award-winning Indian restaurant
2 courses, 2 starters from A la Carte menu
Specialises in South Indian dishes
Rice/nan/tea or coffee included
You don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out that Scotland did not invent Indian food. In fact, you could say that the Indian bit of the name gives the game away.
However, you also don’t need to be Einstein to figure out why Indian food is so popular in Scotland. We are a small, wet country sandwiched between the freezing Atlantic and the chilly North Sea.
It is often cold and dark around these parts while curries are often spicy and warming: the culinary equivalent of a tasty hug from a hot water bottle.
Designed to combat the coldest months, today’s Big Deal with Mezbaan is a great winter warmer.
Southern Indian cooking
Mezbaan in Edinburgh’s Tollcross area is well-known for its authentic South Indian food. In 2010, Chef Shabu Natarajan won the UK South Asian Chef of the Year Award and today’s Big Deal is a great way to see how he wowed the judges.
The deal is for a two course lunch for two people from the a la carte menu including poppadoms and spicy onions/chutney; rice and nan bread; a starter; main course and tea or coffee.
There is a supplement on seafood dishes but this still leaves a massive range to choose from.
South Indian specialities might include dishes like the dosas or pancakes stuffed with fillings such as chicken tikka or the Goan curry made with boneless chicken or lamb cooked in an exotic blend of whole spices, tomatoes, fresh green, red chillies and coconut milk.
Favourite Indian dishes
Of course, the menu also contains old favourites like chicken tikka masala; jalfrezie curries and lamb bhuna.
