Give or take a fraction of a degree, Edinburgh’s latitude is 56 degrees North, much the same as Moscow.
However bling the capital of Russia is, the capital of Edinburgh has one thing that Moscow doesn’t – today’s rather cool Big Deal with the 56 North bar.
A stylish cocktail bar and kitchen on West Cross causeway, 56 North is handy for Edinburgh University’s Bristo Square and is also well placed for a pre-theatre bite before shows at the Festival Theatre.
With huge floor to ceiling windows and cosy booths, 56 North is as great for people-watching as it is for a romantic dinner.
Sirloin steak & chips
Today’s Big Deal with 56 North comes in two versions.
Option one is for two people to each enjoy one of 56 North’s fantastic gourmet burgers with shoestring fries and cocktail each.
The range of burgers changes but popular choices include the ABC, topped with avocado guacamole, smoked bacon and Stilton plus the Little Italy which is topped with buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil.
Option two is for two people to each feast on a 250g sirloin steak served with Innis & Gunn onion rings, shoestring fries and a mixed leaf salad – pretty much the dictionary definition of a mouth-watering dish.
Both options include a cocktail for each diner from the Back to the Cocktail section of the drinks list.
56 North has been the winner of Scottish Licensed Trade News Spirits bar of the year and they have a rather serious cocktail list.
Their Back to the Cocktail section contains a list of classic cocktails from the past and, surprisingly, the future.
From Amaretto Sours to Pine Coladas via the Mango Capriovska, there is something there for everybody.
56 North has no shortage of customers eager to report on how much they enjoyed their meal at 56 North. We chuckled at the Yelp review which reckoned that 56 North was a ‘city centre style cocktail bar without the city centre try hards’.
However, we also liked this from TripAdvisor:
‘Top notch burgers and great service. Glad we booked a table as it was very busy which points to a great place to eat. I had the ABC Burger (avocado, bacon and blue cheese) which comes with shoestring fries. The burger was delicious and it came with so many fries that I had to leave half of them. The service was fantastic. Polite, friendly and helpful. What more could you ask for?’
If you would like to check out 56 North over a gourmet burger or a mighty fine sirloin steak, as well as a cocktail, then mix it up with today’s Big Deal.
