Handpicked for you – curated deals for 5pm customers
First opened in 1925, The Pompadour restaurant was the jewel in the crown of what was then known as the Caledonian Hotel.
Almost a hundred years later, The Pompadour by Galvin is still one of Edinburgh’s most iconic restaurants.
While it may be the Grand Old Dame of the capital’s restaurant scene, the kitchen team moves with the times and The Pomp offers classic French-influenced dishes with a contemporary aesthetic.

Best table in Edinburgh
The restaurant takes its name from the celebrated Madame de Pompadour, the favourite mistress of King Louis XV of France.
Madame de Pompadour was installed in the magnificent Palace at Versailles and the extravagant, listed interior décor of The Pompadour was commissioned to reflect the opulence of the French royal court.
In fact, the restaurant has long enjoyed the reputation of having the best table in Edinburgh with impressive views overlooking Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle through the panoramic arched windows.
Three AA Rosettes
With three AA Rosettes to its name, The Pompadour is as famed for its cuisine as it is for its dining room.
The restaurant is led by brothers Jeff and Chris Galvin who have earned multiple Michelin stars and AA Rosettes. Acclaimed chef Fraser Allan is the Executive Chef charged with overseeing the brothers’ vision.
The kitchens combine the best of classical French-inspired cuisine with locally sourced Scottish ingredients to provide a unique fine dining experience.
Available from 6pm to 8.30pm, on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings, the offer is for two people to have a five course tasting dinner with paired wines and tea or coffee to finish.
The menus change regularly but typical options might be the lasagne of North Berwick crab with a girolle velouté and wild mushrooms or the fillet of tea-smoked Cumbrian beef, Périgord truffle risotto and bone marrow.
The Pompadour by Galvin has been winning friends and admirers since it opened in 2012. This is what a couple of recent guests had to say on TripAdvisor. We have edited them for length.
‘Warm, welcoming, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. A delightful dining experience in a lovely venue. The menu was superb… This deserves a special return visit. Top marks. Thank you.’
‘Superb in every way. From the wonderful menu to the exquisite wine and fabulous service – this is a stand out meal for me – far exceeding others that have Michelin star status. Fully recommend this exceptional restaurant… Absolutely stunning. Huge thanks for a fantastic evening and sorry we had to rush for the train!’
Not so many years ago, if an unmarried couple went to The Pompadour for dinner, there was a fair chance that there would be marriage proposal before the cheese course.
That may be less true these days but every dinner at The Pompadour by Galvin remains a memorable event.
Whether you want to enjoy a romantic dinner, celebrate a special occasion or simply savour some of the finest dishes Edinburgh has to offer this Big Deal at The Pompadour by Galvin will be a meal to remember.
