Wide choice of authentic Spanish tapas
Good selection of Spanish drinks
Eating tapas together can be a real test of a friendship. True chums don’t hog the chilli prawns or pretend that a giraffe has just cycled past the window just so they can scoff the last of the patatas bravas when you turn to look.
We’re not suggesting that you subject your nearest and dearest to trial by tapas but let’s just say that today’s Big Deal could help you decide who deserves to stay on the Christmas card list this year and who doesn’t.
With branches on both Hanover Street and on Shore Place in Leith, the Tapa restaurants bring a little Iberian sunshine to Auld Reekie.
With its stone walls and vaulted ceilings, the Leith Tapa feels most like a Spanish bodega but the Hanover Street branch has city centre ease of access and huge, sunny, window doors in its favour.
Both put on a spread of authentic Spanish tapas that would make the bars of San Sebastian look a little sparse in comparison.
At the last count, there were some 36 different choices of tapas on the menu and they range from old favourites such as tortilla, patatas bravas and battered prawns to cheeky lamb casseroles, grilled chorizo sausages and Granny Carmen’s black pudding, chickpea and chorizo stew.
If you really want to get jiggy then the menu also has an international tapas section where such cross border delights as Moroccan-spiced lamb chops and deep-fried brie with chilli sauce await.
Tapa also features a wide-ranging dessert menu which is considerably better than the ones you will find in most Spanish restaurants.
Their selection of Spanish brandies and liqueurs is pretty tempting as well.
It may be autumn in Edinburgh but it’s always sunny in the Tapa restaurants. Grab a slice of Spanish life with today’s Big Deal:
