Parties, tennis and afternoon tea — those Edwardians certainly knew how to have a good time.
So why not embrace your own Edwardian chic on a stay for two in a 5-star country house hotel?
Built in the early 1900s, Greywalls overlooks the Firth of Forth and is known as a golfer’s paradise. As well as this, you can enjoy award-winning fine dining in the Chez Roux restaurant.
If you have been craving a Downton Abbey experience combined with modern comforts, then you’ve found it.
Treat yourself to a luxury escape
Designed by famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, the 5-star Greywalls hotel fully embodies Scottish country house splendour.
Overlooking the world-famous Muirfield championship course, it is no surprise that Greywalls has earned a stellar reputation with golfers. Yet there is so much more to this graceful mansion house than golf.
You can also enjoy sweeping Firth of Forth views, a fine dining restaurant and plenty of Edwardian charm in the drawing rooms, lounges and library. And let’s not forget the walled gardens designed by the famous Gertrude Jekyll, including a grass tennis court, croquet lawn and putting green.
Today’s Big Deal is for a stay for two with breakfast included. Option one is for a large cottage room and option two is for a large main house room.
The deal is available seven days a week with a £30 supplement for Saturday night stays and a £50 supplement for stays in April.
Children and pets are welcome for a supplement.
Should you wish to upgrade, subject to availability, you may be able to stay in a premium room for a supplement of £70 per night.
Unwind in elegant Edwardian rooms
Each of the 23 en suite bedrooms at Greywalls is unique with its own décor, period touches and antique furnishings.
Most rooms enjoy uninterrupted views over either Muirfield and the Firth of Forth, or the gardens and gentle rolling farmlands leading to the Lammermuir Hills.
These hideaways are perfect for relaxing in and soaking up the country house atmosphere before exploring the rest of the hotel and grounds.
Dine in the Chez Roux restaurant
The hotel’s award-winning Chez Roux restaurant is the brainchild of superstar chef Albert Roux, so expect classical French dishes that showcase local produce.
Spread across four rooms (including a Whisky Room and a Sunroom), Chez Roux offers different menus and settings to suit the occasion, season and time of day.
Although dishes can change regularly, typical mains might include the poached Loch Duart salmon, the roast breast of Gartmon duck and the Gilmour’s beef fillet rolled in onion ash.
There is also a special vegetarian menu, which includes tempting choices such as the lemon & rosemary gnocchi.
Note, dining is not included with the Big Deal.
Explore the Firth of Forth
We have mentioned that Greywalls Hotel has a lot to offer golfers. But if that’s not your bag, then there’s plenty more to see in the area, including coastal walks, wildlife watching and castles such as Tantallon. Plus Edinburgh is only a 30-minute drive away.
Alternatively, you could lounge around in the hotel enjoying the library, gardens and tennis court before heading for afternoon tea in the lovely Summer House Tea Room.
Or why not book a relaxing massage?
Greywalls has an impressive overall TripAdvisor score of 4.5/5, based on over 500 reviews. Here is some recent rave feedback from a guest, which we’ve edited for length:
‘Scottish hospitality at its best. My husband and I stayed at Greywalls for 2 nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The drive up to the hotel is very inviting and enchanting…we were warmly greeted at the door…the staff kindly took our luggage from the car…had pre-ordered bubbles and chocolate strawberries and they were in the room. Member of staff kindly poured our first glasses. We had a large double on first floor in the curve of the entrance. Lovely country style decor with a spacious bathroom. All modern facilities but in heritage style. Best of both worlds…the staff are amazing and the service is simply perfect at all times. Dinner in the restaurant is first class and you never feel rushed…we had some walks in the lovely gardens. In warmer weather would have been nice to sit outside too. Everything here is amazing. Apart from the incredible building and perfect setting, all credit has to go to the staff who just want to make you feel special. Nothing is too much trouble. Hope to make another trip here soon. Greywalls does Scotland proud.’
