Village landmark

Proprietor Billy Robertson put a great deal of love and plenty of hard work into restoring his father’s village local. The aim has been to retain the welcome of a village pub, with great food and comfortable, contemporary rooms.

Available seven days, the Big Deal offers an overnight stay for two in a double room at the Crown & Kitchen, with full Scottish breakfast, a two-course meal for two from the dinner menu, and a glass of wine, bottled beer or soft drink for each diner.

The four individually styled guest rooms have a contemporary boutique hotel feel and come with king-size beds, private ensuite bathroom, free WiFi and Freeview TV.

Scottish menu

Using fresh local produce, the menu at the Crown & Kitchen mixes traditional pub classics with some contemporary, cosmopolitan dishes, cheffy touches and imaginative vegetarian options.

Starters include haggis bon bons, sweet potato and asparagus cakes with chilli crème fraiche, a trio of barbecue chicken skewers, and the Crown’s prawn cocktail.

Highlights from the mains selection include the chef’s steak and red wine pie, lemon and rosemary seasoned scampi, mint and basil marinated lamb chops, and butternut squash fondue with roasted veg and cheese.

The desserts menu features such irresistible items as raspberry and mango cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding and a Black Forest gateau served in a Kilner jar with cream.

Some dishes, such as steaks and the cheese board are available for a small supplement.

Out & about

Less than half an hour from Edinburgh, East Linton makes an excellent base for a relaxed break in the beautiful scenery of East Lothian. Village attractions include the Preston Mill, Scotland’s oldest mechanically-intact watermill. Hailes Castle is a romantic ruin right on your doorstep and the region’s turbulent history means it is blessed with numerous castles and ruins.

The attractive beaches of Gullane and North Berwick are a few minutes drive to the north, and the John Muir long-distance trail offers a variety of strolls for hikers.

Some of the best golf courses in the world including British Open Courses Muirfield, Gullane No. 1 and Archerfield are located close to The Crown And Kitchen. In fact, there are over 20 golf courses within a 10 mile radius of the hotel.
