On the border of Scotland and England, there is a village.
And in that village, there is a blacksmiths.
And in that blacksmiths, there is an anvil.
And legend has it that if you touch that anvil, you will be lucky in love. And while we’re not at all superstitious (ahem), we reckon it can’t hurt to give it a try, can it?
As you might have guessed by now, that village is Gretna and the blacksmiths is where many an eloping couple secretly wed over the years.
So why not grab some of the anvil’s good fortune for yourself on a getaway to the historic Gretna Hall Hotel with today’s Big Deal?
Overnight B&B stay with dinner
Available seven days a week, this Big Deal from Gretna Hall Hotel is for two people to enjoy an overnight stay in a double or twin room with breakfast and dinner included. You can also enjoy the perks of a late check-out at noon and tickets to The Gretna Green Story exhibition, which will give you an insight into the village’s colourful history.
This Big Deal is available seven days a week from 1st August until the end of February 2019.
Escape to a romantic destination
Situated just a mile over the border, the atmospheric Gretna Hall is actually the very first hotel in Scotland. Appropriately for the location, its white exterior even looks a little bit like a wedding cake.
The hotel’s public areas have been recently refurbished, giving it a fresh new look. Its roots actually stretch all the way back to 1710, when it was built as a manor house. In fact, the manor played an important part in forging Gretna’s reputation as a destination for eloping couples. That’s because princes, dukes and lords were all wed there when it operated as a marriage house.
Set in ten acres of landscaped grounds, Gretna Hall is the perfect base from which to explore the Scottish Borders as well as the Lake District.
If shopping is more your thing, then the nearby Gretna Outlet Centre can provide happy hunting.
Relax in a comfy room
Each of the 97 guest rooms at Gretna Hall Hotel are ensuite. A number have recently been refurbished.
Rooms also have free WiFi, a flat screen TV, direct dial telephone, tea/coffee maker, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries. Room service is also available, should you fancy getting cosy and hiding yourselves away.
You also have the option of upgrading to a Junior Suite for a supplement, which you can arrange directly with the hotel when booking.
Sample local produce
This offer includes a £15 per person dining allowance for the Anvil Restaurant and Bar.
The Chef works closely with local producers within the Scottish Borders and Cumbria to create a menu that gives a real taste of the area.
Typical starters might include the twice-baked Auld Reekie Cheese soufflé, the Scotch broth and the potted, slow-cooked beef.
Popular main courses include the steak and haggis pie, the lamb hot pot and the pearl barley & root vegetable risotto. The steaks in the grill section have many fans.
