Back when the Borders was the Scottish equivalent of the Wild West, it wasn’t unusual for Comlongon Castle to have a couple of kidnapped guests in the dungeon.
Their ransom would be paid in sheep or cattle.
These days, visitors to the Dumfries and Galloway hotel enjoy much more comfortable surrounds and most of them prefer to use a credit card to settle their bills rather than livestock.
Sitting in 120 acres of grounds, Comlongon Castle is a beautifully restored, 15th century Scottish castle with a luxurious Edwardian hotel attached.
Boasting a Great Hall, fantastic displays of armour and weapons, open fires and gorgeous landscaped gardens, it is a stunning location for a tranquil getaway.
It is also very conveniently located: only 20 minutes from Carlisle and less than two hours from Edinburgh and Glasgow.
If you are looking for a romantic night away, the option to stay in the gorgeous Honeymoon Lodge is an opportunity to enjoy the last word in luxury.
This Big Deal has four options.
Option one is for two people to enjoy an overnight stay in a standard double or twin room with a full Scottish breakfast. Option two is for an overnight stay and includes a two course meal from the set menu.
Option three is for a two night stay with a full Scottish breakfast each morning and two course meal on the first night.

Medieval meets modern day
Steeped in Scottish Border history, Comlongon Castle has fourteen, luxury, en-suite bedrooms which blend Medieval atmosphere and modern comfort.
All rooms are individually themed and feature tea and coffee making facilities, Freeview TV and ironing facilities. The hotel has free Wi-Fi.
The Honeymoon Lodge is a spectacular development for Comlongon.
Located next to the Medieval Keep, it is set within its own private walled gardens, with water features and sculptures by renowned local artist Lucianne Lassalle.
The Lodge consists of a large entertaining area, two bathrooms and a bedroom with a handmade, seven foot wide bed and, not one, but two separate dressing areas.
The bathrooms are lined with Travertine mosaics. One has a large, sunken, clover-leaf bath with its own television. Or you could use the walk-in shower room with its uniquely designed etched glass panels.
All the furniture in the Lodge has been especially commissioned from local firms and artists.
The Lodge has under floor heating throughout while the living room also boasts a six foot wide digitally controlled gas fireplace.
In short, the Honeymoon Lodge is stunning.

‘Amazing place. We had an amazing stay in this hotel… The place is so historical and peaceful. Definitely we will go again!!’
‘Took my breath away. This is my favourite hotel so far this year… You really feel that you have arrived as soon as you enter the driveway and, once inside, the magic just continues. The hotel staff are all friendly and enthusiastic… The sitting room is spectacular… You can pay a visit to the old castle which is a wonderful experience if a little eerie. Not to be missed but take a torch. Room facilities are good… Hotel is spotlessly clean and there is interest and individuality around every corner. We didn’t want to leave and will definitely be back.’
