Greyholme - The Big Wooden House

Team Big Deal stopped believing in magic after we attended a children’s party and the old pulling-a-rabbit-from-the-hat trick went regrettably wrong.

More happily, our disbelief hasn’t stopped us from falling under the spell of The Big Wooden House on Arran.

A listed building from the 1930s, it was built in the Arts and Crafts style by architect William Gibson OBE.

Its proper name is Greyholme and, with its fairytale looks and gorgeous wooden carvings, it has us enchanted.

Reached by a tree-lined driveway, this beautiful holiday home sits in 1.3 acres of grounds in Brodick on the Isle of Arran. It has 43 windows with views of the sea or mountains from all of them.

Magical experience

Gas, electricity, linen, bedding and towels are all included. There is oil-fired central heating throughout.

Luxury self catering

Close to Brodick village and Auchrannie’s spa amenities, Greyholme offers luxury self catering accommodation. There are two double rooms, two family rooms and a twin room, all of which have stunning views, as does the luxurious main bathroom.

The house sits beside the mouth of the Rosaburn river with a choice of two beaches close by. The fourth tee of the golf course is just on the other side of a tall hedge. Brodick is an easy walk along the fisherman’s walk or by the main road.

The house is on stilts, which means all the public rooms are on the first floor. There’s a veranda round most of this floor, great for smokers or sunbathers, autumnal weather permitting.

Spacious accommodation

The first floor has a dining room with a ten seat table; a living room with a baby grand piano, multi-burner stove and TV with Freeview; a dining kitchen with oil-fired Aga, loo and a double bedroom with a door to its own veranda.

The second floor has two bathrooms. The larger has a separate, walk-in wet room/shower.

There are three double bedrooms, one family room and one twin room. There’s also a separate loo and a laundry room.

See & do on Arran

Greyholme sits next to the fourth tee of Brodick Golf course, one of seven on the island. The world famous gardens of Brodick Castle and Auchrannie Spa Hotel, with its two swimming pools, are also nearby.

If you love wildlife watching, Arran is still one of the few places left in Scotland that have red squirrel as well as red deer and golden eagles.

Head north to Lochranza with its ancient castle, whisky distillery and scenic harbour, and you may see otters, seals, dolphins and perhaps even basking sharks.

Other pastimes such as fishing, pony trekking, canoeing and paragliding are all available on the island along with superb hill walking opportunities.
