You don’t need to be a beautiful damsel in distress or a charming knight errant to enjoy a stay in a Scottish castle.

Set within 60 acres of woodland gardens, Stonefield Castle Hotel was built in 1837.

Many of the beautiful period features, such as the wood panelling, ornate ceilings and marble fireplaces, have been retained.

Close to the pretty fishing village of Tarbert, the castle stands high on the famous Kintyre peninsula and has spectacular views over Loch Fyne and the gardens.

Guests are encouraged to stroll through the hotel’s mature woodland gardens with its exotic rhododendron and spot red squirrels and resident roe deer.

At dusk it is sometimes possible to catch sight of seals swimming by the jetty or an otter playing on the rocks.

Available seven days a week, this fantastic deal comes in two versions.

Option one is for an overnight stay for two in a twin or double room.

As well as a full Scottish breakfast in the morning, the offer includes dinner and a bottle of house wine in your room on arrival.

Option two is for a two night stay for two in a twin or double room. This option includes a full Scottish breakfast in the morning and dinner in hotel’s AA Rosette restaurant on the first night.

Each of the 36 rooms is individually decorated and many have views of the loch. All are ensuite with digital TVs, hair dryers and hot drinks facilities.

The hotel offers WiFi and free on-site parking.

There is a £20 Supplement for Saturday night stays.

The hotel restaurant is well known for the high quality of its cooking and both locally sourced beef, game and seafood take pride of place on the menu.

Typical starters on the regularly changing menu might be the Loch Fyne mussels served in white wine with garlic, shallots and cream or the crab beignets with garlic, langoustines, lime, sun blushed tomato, basil mayonnaise and pickled courgettes.

Popular main courses include the venison haunch with a potato and chestnut rosti and the boudin of chicken, served with pearl barley, wild mushroom and chorizo risotto, sautéed spinach and wild garlic with chorizo oil.

The only thing that may distract you from the food is the breath-taking view over the loch.

After dinner, guests are encouraged to enjoy a drink in front of the log fire in the bar.

See & do

Just two miles away, the pretty village of Tarbert is well worth a visit. As well as fishing boats and yachts, there may be the chance to see the harbour’s visiting pod of dolphins.

There are many walks and trails in the area to suit hikers and ramblers. For those who prefer adventure on the water, there are boat trips to Seil Island or the Corryvreckan Whirlpool.

Stonefield Castle can also arrange fly fishing on Loch Fyne or even horse trail riding at the nearby Brenfield Estate. Stonefield is also a golfer’s paradise, with five courses all within 40 miles.
