According to Argos, something called Pie Face will be one of this year’s best selling Christmas presents.
We don’t recommend it for anyone over the age of five.
A rather more romantic idea would be this Big Deal on an overnight getaway at the gorgeous Taychreggan Hotel – formerly a cattle drovers’ inn.
Built on a small peninsula that juts out into Loch Awe, Taychreggan is at the loch’s narrowest crossing point and drovers would make their cattle swim across the water from the inn.
Now a beautiful, white-washed, country house hotel, the Taychreggan has one of the finest loch-side locations in Scotland.
Majestic mountains; deep forests and stunning lochs make the area a perfect spot for walkers, fishermen, mountain bikers and, of course, romantics. Spend a little time here and it will come as no surprise that the AA awarded the Taychreggan the title of ‘One of Britain’s Most Romantic Hotels’.
However you choose to spend your time, roaring fires, over-stuffed chairs, a snooker room and the welcoming Drovers’ Bar mean that the Taychreggan offers plenty of Highland comforts to return to at the end of the day.
4 star country house
Available seven days a week, this Big Deal is for two people to enjoy a relaxing overnight bed and breakfast stay in one of the luxurious loch view junior suites at the four star Taychreggan Hotel.
Option two allows you to enjoy a two consecutive night stay in this tranquil spot – the perfect way to fully recharge your batteries.
The junior suites are all ensuite and feature beautiful fabrics, fluffy dressing gowns, flat screen TVs (limited channels), bottled water, a tea and coffee making tray, hairdryer, Molton Brown toiletries – the list goes on.
A decanter of complimentary sherry will help you settle into your room.
The offer is valid seven days a week but Saturday nights are only available as part of a two night stay.
The junior suites are gorgeous but if you really want to make your stay at Taychreggan Hotel extra special then you can upgrade to a master suite for an extra £25 per night, payable directly to the hotel.
A fantastic, full Scottish breakfast is included in the offer. You can also choose to take dinner, at an additional cost, in the hotel restaurant where the arched windows provides views down Loch Awe.
The proud holder of two AA Rosettes, the kitchen makes the most of local produce on the regularly changing, five course, table d’hôte, evening menu.
The current menu includes dishes such as sea bass escabeche with compressed tomato terrine, with quails egg, caviar, pickles, red pepper coulis and red amaranth.
Following the fish course might be something along the lines of the poached and roasted venison saddle and crispy shoulder with shallots, braised red cabbage, baby potatoes, broccoli and a port wine jus.
Leave room for dessert. Warm carrot cake with orange and carrot jelly, roasted chestnuts, coconut sorbet and hazelnut tuiles is wowing guests at the moment.
This Big Deal member stayed at the Taychreggan a couple of years back. I loved the loch location, comfy bed and delicious dinner.
You don’t have to take our word for how good the Taychreggan is. This is what a recent guest had to say on TripAdvisor:
‘Elegant hotel, dining and view. I highly recommend this hotel for a several day stay. The rooms are deluxe, the view divine and the dining experience worth the extra price. The hotel is off the beaten path, about 20 miles from Oban, but well worth the drive. We only stayed one night but recommend a longer stay if you are looking for a romantic get-away. The complimentary sherry was an added bonus.’
With vouchers valid until the 30th of March, this Big Deal from the Taychreggan Hotel would make a luxurious Christmas present.
We all know someone who would smile at the thought of being whisked away for a cosy Highland break.
