Badger & Co is on Castle Street in the former home of Kenneth Grahame, the author of Wind in the Willows. This history plays a prominent part in the decor. Think Toad Hall’s padded leather seats, chandeliers and wood panelled walls. There are deer heads wearing wigs and a picture of a well dressed badger riding a penny farthing. It’s how a 21st century hipster might imagine an Edwardian gentleman’s club. As well as a private dining room, there are several intriguing nooks and crannies and a courtyard for al fresco drinks and dining.

Along with highlighted architectural details of the brickwork, these give Chop House a chic post industrial feel. As well as the vibrant restaurant, the new Chop House boasts an impressive bar – the place to enjoy a pre or post dinner drink, or to spend an evening with friends sampling carefully-selected craft beers and bespoke seasonal cocktails.

Shebeen is a traditionally styled South African restaurant on Dalry Road. Taking its name from township drinking dens, the dining room is fitted with chunky wooden furniture and decorated with African art and textiles. One corner is given over to portraits of happy Springboks captains. The wine list and selection of beers also reflect the restaurant’s South African heritage. Such is the success of the Shebeen idea, the company has two other branches: one on Morrison Street and one in Dalkeith. This is a great venue for group dining as well as more intimate meals.
