83 Hutcheson Street, G1 1SH
Merchant City, Glasgow
Cuisine: British, European, International
Named after a legendary 19th century Glasgow glutton, Rab Ha’s is a welcoming bar and restaurant with rooms on Hutcheson Street. In the summer of 2017, new owners gave the much-loved Merchant City institution a thoughtful refurbishment. The very opposite of a bland chain, Rab Ha’s is an independent, family-run with business with oodles of character. Visitors can look forward to a cosy and tranquil space with stripped stone walls, an open fire and wood panelling in the bar and restaurant.

McCormick Lane, G1 3AJ
City Centre, Glasgow
Cuisine: Seafood, Fish & Chips
The Chippy Doon The Lane has updated the concept of the traditional fish and chip shop for the 21st century, with a fresh, contemporary space on McCormick Lane, just off Buchanan Street in Glasgow’s city centre. With a slight industrial feel thanks to its stripped bricks and exposed pipe work, The Chippy Doon The Lane’s welcoming staff and lighting give the restaurant a warm glow.
657-659 Pollokshaws Road, G41 2AB
South Side, Glasgow
Cuisine: Caribbean, Seafood, BBQ
The Rum Shack is a Caribbean bar, canteen and venue on Pollokshaws Road in Glasgow’s Southside. With more than a hundred rums behind the bar and an endearingly rough-hewn, beach hut decor, it does exactly what it says on the tin. There is live music or DJs in the main bar most nights of the week and The Rum Shack’s dancehall venue hosts theatre, bands, comedy, club nights and artisan markets. An outside seating area is very popular when the sun comes out. More than the sum of its parts, The Rum Shack is something of a community hub in the Southside.
14 - 15 Albert Place, EH7 5HN
Leith, Edinburgh
Cuisine: Scottish, Seafood, Fish & Chips
The Tailend is a comfortable and casual dining room and adjacent chip shop on Albert Place, on Leith Walk. The Traditional haddock supper, served with garden or mushy peas, chips and bread and butter, is always popular but there are plenty of other, perhaps surprising, options. Med-style fish stew, langoustine tails and lobster mean that The Tailend is a definite cut above most chip shops.
Kirkhouse Inn, G63 9AL
near Glasgow, Glasgow
Cuisine: Seafood, Gastro Pub
Named after the old Scots word for thistle, the Thrisstle restaurant is part of the Kirkhouse Inn on Strathblane’s Glasgow Road. The building dates back over 400 years and, in the past, has been used as stables and a schoolhouse. Now refurbished, it’s a family-run business and the restaurant takes great pride in using locally sourced beef, venison and even locally reared Oxford Cross pigs. As well as a separate sports bar, the restaurant has its own whisky bar, the Baurley-bree. There is entertainment most weekends and plenty of outdoor seating for the sunny days.
20 Princes Street, EH2 2AN
New Town, Edinburgh
Cuisine: British, Seafood, Steaks & Grill
Twenty Princes Street Grill & Smokehouse has a prime city centre position on Edinburgh’s Princes Street. Triple height windows give the first floor restaurant fantastic views over the city centre to the Castle. With oak floors, ornate ceilings and leather banquette seating, the interior is just as eye-catching. In the kitchen, the chefs use lots of Lothian-sourced ingredients to create dishes with flair.
118A Blythswood Street, G2 4EG
Part of Glasgow’s boutique group of Two Fat Ladies restaurants, the city centre branch, like its sister operations, specialises in Scottish seafood. While prime fish and shellfish from the waters of the West Coast unite all the Two Fat Ladies, they each have their own character. The Blythswood Street branch is small but neat, chic and perfectly formed. It is also very usefully located for visits to the nearby King’s Theatre.
