Sorry, Chaophraya Newcastle doesn't currently have online booking on 5pm :(
Part of a nationwide family of Thai restaurants, Chaophraya is in Grey’s Quarter at Newcastle’s intu Eldon Square. Rooftop views of the city centre and Grey’s monument compete with a rich interior design which is dotted with golden Buddhas, elephants statues, gongs and exotic flowers. Clad in traditional dress, the waiting staff are always happy to advise on the intricacies of the Thai menus. Or indeed the extensive cocktail list. The Buddha Balcony offers al fresco dining while protected from the elements.
Eating family-style, with everyone at the table sharing, is encouraged. All the dishes are marked for spiciness. From pad Thai to red and green curries plus the Thai fish cakes, there are plenty of well-loved and familiar Thai dishes on the menu here. Wandering a little further off the well-trodden paths leads to dishes like the tempura soft shell crab and a dish of panko crumb-coated chicken breast which is deep-fried and served with melon, cucumber and pineapple in a plum sauce. Of course, no Thai meal would be complete without the som tam salad – a fiery dish of shredded papaya.
Chaophraya is on the Upper level of Grey’s Quarter at intu Eldon Square. Eldon Square bus station and Haymarket bus stations are nearby. By train, the nearest station is Newcastle Central, a leisurely ten minute walk along Grainger Street. By Metro, the centre has direct links into Monument station. Local attractions include the Theatre Royal and Tyneside Cinema.
