Small and perfectly formed sums up Number 16. It’s an extremely welcoming place that consistently delivers first-rate food and ambiance. I’d been desperate to go back there in February and have my wife experience one of the best starters that I’ve ever had. This was a sublime work of art in the form of a miniature egg-glazed, pasty crammed full of succulent, tender ox-tail on a bed of puy lentils and tiny cubes of roasted beetroot, which she raved over too. As my other ‘number 16 favourite’, fishcakes, was not on the menu, we also tried the mini fish pie with saffron mash. This was a taste sensation that clearly used well-balanced, quality ingredients and had texture to the fish/mash core supplied by petit pois. My main course of fish rarebit with smoked haddock risotto was a perfectly balanced delight. My sweet provided exactly the right end to a wonderful meal being a very original, refreshing fruit salad formed from an exciting combination of poached pear, pineapple, pomegranate and chilli together with a passion fruit sorbet. Go there .. !
