Byres Road café, bistro and patisserie
Matilda’s is a light, bright and friendly café bistro on Byres Road in Glasgow’s West End. The incredible display of cakes, tarts and gateaux is hard to miss but Matilda’s offers so much more. From French waffles at breakfast to hearty Scottish dishes in the evening, Matilda’s is a welcome sight at any time of day. A BYOB policy with small corkage charge is another reason to visit.
Modern Scottish dishes
Matilda’s all day brunches, grilled sandwiches and sour dough baguettes tempt diners during the day. At night, it’s all about modern Scottish dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. This might mean classics such as the gateau of haggis, neeps and tatties or contemporary versions of familiar dishes like the Stornoway black pudding served with a seasonal salad, pancetta crisp and soft poached egg.
Main courses might be a Mull cheddar soufflé, slow braised shin of beef or gorgeous fish and chips. Flavours from the rest of the world also make regular appearances in choices like the Thai chicken soup; the seared salmon with a basil crust and the caramel ginger chicken. Desserts like the passion fruit meringue tart with crème Chantilly are worth saving space for.
