Quirky bar in Glasgow’s West End
Formerly a cinema, Hillhead Bookclub is now a beautifully restored, charmingly bohemian bar and kitchen on Vinicombe Street. Just off Byres Road, in the heart of Glasgow’s West End, the Hillhead Bookclub is a multi-level venue that pairs good value, rustic food with a ping pong table, hip music and cocktails served in gramophones.
Comfort food near Byres Road
The Hillhead Bookclub keeps it simple when it comes to its menus. Honest food at honest prices is the aim. Served on random crockery, this means pies; bangers ‘n’ mash; stews, chowders and fish ‘n’ chips. Pancakes, burgers and gourmet sandwiches look after the lunch and brunch menus. It is the sort of straightforward, hearty comfort food that people actually want to eat.
Veggies are well catered for with dishes such as the winter veg coconut curry; salads made with baked figs, honey and pomegranate or risotto flavoured with wild fungi, spinach and smoked garlic. They will even do an afternoon tea with a tiered cake stand. The prices are student-friendly.
West End transport
The Hillhead Bookclub is on Vinicombe Street, just off the Great Western Road end of Byres Road. Hillhead Subway Station is a five minute walk. There are several bus stops on Byres Road and the Great Western Road and there are numerous taxi ranks in the area. There is a limited amount of pay parking in the streets surrounding the Hillhead Bookclub.
Free wifi access is available every day of the week, ideal if you’ve got a working lunch or just feel like a nosey on Facebook.
