    Will definitely return

This is the second time we have visited 1051 GWR and it just gets better. The food and service were wonderful. We had the chateaubriand, which was more than enough for 2, but had to order more sides as we couldn’t decide what we wanted. Everything sounded so good, and it was good. Will definitely be going back for this again.

    1051 superb

Booked via 5pm craft menu - 2 choices for starter which were lovely. Quite varied choice for mains: we ordered the Angus burger and mushroom and onion pizza. Both were very fresh and they don’t skimp on portion sizes. Choice pudding for an extra £3 sticky toffee pudding which was yummy. £17 for 3 courses which included a beer. Outstanding value and staff very attentive. Can’t wait to go back.

Cosmopolitan bar and kitchen in West End

Originally a Victorian railway station, 1051 GWR is a cosmopolitan bar and kitchen on Great Western Road in Glasgow’s Kelvinside. Designed in the Beaux Art style by J.J. Burnett, the building underwent an extensive refurbishment before relaunching as 1051 GWR towards the end of 2015.

The renovations revealed original sandstone walls while the newly installed train carriage-style booth seating underlines the railway heritage of the category B listed building. A wood-burning stove keeps the spacious interior toasty during the colder months while tall windows mean that the space is flooded with light in the summer months. A selection of twenty craft beers and the extensive cocktail range keep thirst at bay.

Local suppliers, seasonal ingredients

Local and seasonal produce are at the heart of a flexible menu which takes inspiration from all over the globe. 1051 GWR is the first restaurant in the UK to be owned by a restaurateur with an MSc in Gastronomy and this is reflected in the carefully designed menu. From stone-baked pizza and small plates of duck spring rolls to pan-seared Oban scallops with Ramsay’s black pudding, the kitchens fuse international flavours with Scottish ingredients.

As well as lunch deals, Sunday roasts, sharing platters and a selection of sandwiches and ciabattas, there are main course options such as the very popular fish ‘n’ chips; Steak & Belhaven Ale pie with vegetables & chips and the Aberdeen Angus house burger which is served with beef dripping chips. Pride of place goes to the grill section which features locally reared beef that has been dry aged for a minimum of 21 days.

Local attractions and transport

1051 GWR is on Great Western Road by Gartnavel Hospital. There is car parking on site. Several bus routes run to and from the city centre along Great Western Road. The nearest train stations are Anniesland and Hyndland. Local attractions include Glasgow Botanic Gardens and Hughenden Rugby Club.
