Family-run Giffnock bistro

Run by the award-winning, eponymous chef and his wife, Ian Brown Restaurant is a relaxed and friendly neighbourhood hotspot. The décor is elegantly simple – check the Paul Hodgkiss hardwood fittings – and the service is informal and professional. The setting may be suburban but the cooking would give many a respected city centre restaurant a very stiff run for their money.

Locally sourced, freshly cooked from scratch

Local sourcing is central to the kitchen and every dish is cooked from scratch at Ian Brown Restaurant. The cooking is modern Scottish in that Scottish ingredients are proudly listed and then prepared using techniques and flavours from around the globe.

The menus change depending on the seasons and availability but typical starters might be the seared West Coast scallops on a potato rosti with coral and Noilly Prat sauce or the warm salad of chicken livers and strawberries with a Pedro Ximenez vinaigrette.

Main courses might be classically French like the grilled Perthshire pigeon breasts on a bed of Puy lentils with a mushroom cream sauce or more exotic – such as the poached brill strips in a lightly curried Sauvignon cream sauce. Those who like to keep it simple will appreciate choices like the pan-fried Scotch T-bone steak with chips, onion rings and tomato chutney
