Our visit to the Metropolitan began well, and continued fairly well until we ordered our desert. We have always enjoyed this restaurant, but on this occasion the service marred the whole experience.
Our order was taken promptly and our starters arrived without too much delay. I had the orange and walnut salad and my wife had the “duo of Scottish puddings”. The difference between the “duo” and the more common “trio” was that there was no haggis, although the dish was very acceptable for all that.
On to the main course and I enjoyed the chicken while my wife got close to the salmon. Everything, so far, was excellent.
We ordered our deserts. My wife asked about the source of the ice cream; it came from an artisan ice cream maker in Hamilton. She ordered three scoops of this really fresh and delicious dairy ice cream. I was impressed by the sourcing of this product from a local farm and noticed that the orange tart came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. That is what I ordered. And so we began to wait. Forty minutes later we were still waiting. The train that we had hoped to catch would have gone before our desert had been served.
We asked the waiter to bring our free Auchentoshans. We asked him to bring the bill. He eventually brought the deserts. The ice cream did not disappoint, but the reason for the delay was that they had needed to make some chantilly cream for my orange tart. The menu had said nothing about chantilly cream, and as you guessed there was no ice cream on my plate.
Will we go back? Probably.
