A’Challtainn is an award-winning seafood restaurant and cocktail bar in the heart of Barras Art and Design at the Barras. It is pronounced A Cawl Tain, after the Gaelic for Calton. As well as being the name for this part of Glasgow, it also means the hazel wood. The restaurant is on a mezzanine level overlooking the BAaD courtyard. The cocktail bar nestles under the restaurant and provides views of the chefs at work.
Serving the finest Scottish fish and shellfish, alongside carefully crafted meat and vegetarian dishes, the kitchen at A’Challtainn takes great pride in their sustainably sourced seafood. Beautifully presented, the dishes range from simple oysters and plates of langoustines to options like the pan-seared hake with mango, red onion and coriander salsa plus peppered rocket leaves. From the starters, the charred octopus and the Cullen skink are always popular. Neither vegetarians or carnivores are overlooked. The pulled shoulder of lamb with Israeli cous cous, harissa, pomegranate and mint would please the latter while beetroot gravlax or confit leeks with kimchi and kohlrabi dressing and wasabi mayo might appeal to the former.
A’Challtainn is a seafood restaurant and bar in the Barras Art and Design complex on Calton Entry. It is just around the corner from music venues such as Barrowland Ballroom and Saint Luke’s. Glasgow Green is a short walk. There is restricted on-street parking and pay parking at Spoutmouth. The nearest train station is Argyle Street.
