I had a voucher for 2 courses for 2 people from the pre-theatre menu, however the menu had recently changed. It was so new that it hadn't even been changed on the hotel's website. We like to have a look at the menu before going for dinner, especially on a set menu, as my partner is allergic to eggs and we like to make sure there is something on offer he can actually eat.
We ordered our meal from the new menu only to discover that my partner's starter contained egg. We discovered that the only starter that did not contain egg was cullen skink, however my partner does not like fish. I asked our server if there was anything the chef could exchange this for she said there was not, we could only order from the set menu. We would have been happy even purchasing a starter from the a la carte menu, however they said we couldn't. My partner's only option was to have a dessert only to be told all the desserts on the menu had egg in them, even the ice-cream, however this time he was offered sorbet as an alternative. I then asked if I could just have a dessert also so that we were eating together and I was told the kitchen had already started making my starter. My starter was unfortunately rather cold.
Our glasses of prosecco, which were rather warm, were initially delivered to the wrong table. I realise on a busy night in any restaurant this can happen, however I watched the same waiter bring wrong drinks to wrong tables most of the evening. Not very comforting to watch especially after the disappointment in ordering our meal.
I had the pork with BBQ sauce and potatoes for main, no vegetables in sight. I would had appreciated the option to order some if I had know it did not come with any. It contained 2 slices of pork which were about 3 inches by 2 inches in size and very thinly sliced. It was swimming in a pool of soft potatoes and BBQ sauce. It did not look appetising at all I must admit but it did taste rather nice, I just wished there was more of it. My partner has a steak which looked lovely. He asked for it to be cooked medium but I would say it was well done. Upon cutting it you could see it was cooked right through with no pink to be seen. I would have expected it to be slightly under cooked than over cooked in a restaurant of this standard.
After we had finished our mains cutlery was brought over for my partner's dessert, I wasn't asked if I wanted to order one. The sorbet was lovely, best part of the dinner I think.
I have never left a bad review about a restaurant before but in this case I feel I had to. We were very disappointed with the service and standard of food at Tempus and we will not back back.
