The staff here were great, very warm and welcoming. I like the décor, typical of good Glasgow Italian and not too pretentious. I really wanted to like this place and I did but with reservations! The pace of the meal was slow due to the kitchen but we enjoyed that and were in no rush and had just had rosemary focaccia when we arrived.
We ordered tiger prawns for our starter, we got 4 and they were cooked from frozen. Although they were OK, they were not great and had that patina on them that you get from some time in the deep freeze.
Their pizza's are cooked traditionally in a wood fired oven and came out exactly as I like them, not too much topping and a perfect thin base. The only issue I had here was my order of buffalo mozzarella on the pizza (a pound or two extra) with black olives and capers. It came with the cheap mozzarella that is traditionally used on pizza's and certainly not buffalo. I laughed it off and said to the waitress who agreed with me.
When the owner/ manager came around to see how things were I mentioned to him about the frozen prawns and non buffalo mozzarella and I really enjoyed our discussion and his attempt at convincing me that it was and that cooking white buffalo mozzarella it comes out looking like the yellow one. I have eaten and made enough pizza's in my life to know and laughed it off. He also said there's not a restaurant in Glasgow that doesn't use frozen prawns!
In short, I recommend O Sole Mio for good atmosphere and their wood oven cooked pizza but stick to that!
