My friend was late for our deal time which was the latest time we could take the deal (of 2 courses and a small glass of wine for £9.95) but the waiter was very understanding and they still honored the deal even though she ran in 25 minutes late. It would have been nice if this same waiter had asked me if I would like a drink. I had been sitting for 10 minutes when a different waiter noticed I didn't have a drink, seemed shocked and asked me what I would like. The restaurant wasn't busy with only one other couple in it at about 3pm. I prefer Soba to be quieter as having been during the lunchtime rush before it's too noisy then and the tables upstairs are very close together. Even when it's quite Soba still has a nice ambiance.
The starters were nice - I had pad thai spring rolls and my friend was able to substitute sushi into the deal although the sushi rice was falling apart a bit too much. We both had the same main of basil chilli chicken which, I have to say, of the many times I've been to Soba and enjoyed the food, was a great let down. The tempura chicken was chewy with a heavy batter and the dish didn't have the strength of flavour you'd expect. I have had lovely meals at Soba in the past including lovely starter tempura (although on my last visit this was also a bit chewy with heavy batter - a shame, as it had been my favourite at Soba before). I WOULD return to Soba to give it another go as they offer good deals and usually the food is lovely. I just wouldn't choose that main course again. The service during the rest of the meal was good.
