Glasgow has a well developed and highly competitive Indian restaurant market but Assam’s seems to have pretty much cracked it from the day the city centre restaurant opened in 2009. It could be because Assam’s owner and chef have a long history working for other Indian restaurants in Glasgow and they’ve brought all that expertise to bear on their own venture. A seasonally changing menu and the championing of local ingredients all make Assam’s stand out from many of its competitors in Glasgow.
One of the reasons for Assam’s success in Glasgow’s Indian scene is that all of their several menus keep evolving. Whether you eat from their lunchtime buffet menu, the selection of tapas, the kids’ menu or the a la carte, the kitchen at Assams is always developing new dishes. Of course, there are lots of well known dishes on the menu like the chicken pakora and the tandoori king prawn but they are complemented by dishes like the lamb roasted with mint and the green chilli fish pakora. For a real treat with a difference, plan ahead and, 24 hours in advance, order a slow cooked leg of lamb. Rather than offering a massive menu of pre-cooked curries, Assam’s cooks everything to order; another reason why many of Glasgow’s newspaper critics have given it a big thumbs up.
