The staff were friendly enough, there was no real atmosphere though we were dining early (6.15)There was a large tourist coach party in who seemed to be served their 3 courses in record time, and more tables were set ready for large groups. The food was 'ok' - not awful but not great, just 'ok'; the pate was nice, the asparagus dish very salty with a very runny sauce. We were not convinced the parma ham was actually parma ham - very thickly cut, the lamb was slightly dry, the chicken was ok and the duck was nicely done but the accompanying veg was slightly boring and unimaginative; peas & carrots,as there are so many places in Edinburgh who do similar style food which is really tasty and with a bit more thought put into the presentation and accompaniments for similar prices. I think maybe Merchants need to up their game slightly. I wouldn't rush back and I would recommend other places before I would recommend here. The coffee was nice as was the wine! Be aware that service charge is included here too, possibly as the seem to depend heavily on tour parties.
