Old Town, Edinburgh
Named after the street it can be found on, Merchants is a Scottish restaurant in Edinburgh’s Old Town just off Candlemaker Row. The restaurant is striking mix of red walls, white columns and curios that echo its historic surroundings. Merchants is wheelchair accessible, child-friendly and within walking distance of many attractions such as Greyfriars Kirkyard, St. Giles Cathedral and the National Museum of Scotland.
Equally as suitable for a romantic dinner as it is for a business lunch of Edinburgh lawyers, Merchants regularly changing menus walk a neat line between tradition and innovation.
The ingredients will change according to the seasons but asparagus spears served with a Hollandaise sauce and Parmesan is a classic combination that needs no tweaking. On the other hand, the breast of duck served with a rhubarb and ginger sauce is a deft innovation while the haggis spring rolls with creamed neeps show a definite willingness to move with the times. For the main part though, the dishes are good, solid classics.
Merchants is on Merchant Street in the heart of the Old Town and around fifteen minutes on foot from Edinburgh’s Waverley train station. Some pay and display street parking is available close to the restaurant and taxi ranks can be found on nearby George IV Bridge or on West Bow just off Cowgate. Bus stops are also within walking distance of Merchants.
