Food was excellent. Personally I'm not a huge fan of plates of food you can stick in your eye, but I couldn't fault the quality

Modern European restaurant in Edinburgh city centre

The Lantern Room is an informal restaurant and bar on Baxter’s Place by Edinburgh Playhouse. Opened at the end of 2016, it has a smart, contemporary decor and serves everything from lunch and afternoon tea to after work drinks and dinner. The waiting staff are as welcoming as they are professional and the bar staff are always happy to mix up a cocktail. The spacious heated terrace is great for people watching, perhaps over a sun downer or two.

Scottish produce, carefully presented

Local produce and thoughtful, artful presentation are at the heart of both the main menu and the prix fixe menu at The Lantern Room. Dishes range from familiar classics such as the burgers or beer-battered haddock to more complex options such as the creamed goat’s cheese with roasted beetroot, compressed watermelon and cracked black pepper tile.

From the sausage of the day to gourmet sandwiches and juicy steaks, there are choices for every occasion and appetite. Sharing platters and a selection of small plates add to the flexibility of the menu.

Edinburgh city centre transport

The Lantern Room is on Baxter’s Place at the top of Leith Walk. York Place tram stop is a five minute walk. Waverley train station is a ten minute walk. There is pay parking at the Omni centre. Edinburgh Playhouse is a two minute walk from the restaurant.
