About The Basement
Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh’s New Town
The Basement is a Mexican bar and restaurant on Edinburgh’s Broughton Street. With decor of patterned fabrics, multicolor painted seats and día de muertos artwork, it is a festive environment in which to dine. A menu of Mexican dishes, an impressive drinks list (featuring an extensive list of tequilas and mezcals) and live music are further enticing reasons to visit The Basement.
Traditional and Creative Mexican dishes
The menu at The Basement is filled with traditional Mexican favourites like fajitas, enchiladas and chilli – but the attention to detail and bold flavours make the restaurant stand above the others.
Their menu begins with food to nibble on while you wait, such as a trio of mole and guacamole (freshly prepared at your table to your own specification) before moving on to starters like chicken wings marinated with peanuts and jalapenos, pork and beef meatballs in a fiery tomato and chilli mole sauce, and nachos loaded with jalapenos, monterey jack cheese, tomatillo ketchup and avocado topped with The Basement’s signature lime and coriander crema.
The main courses feature traditional Mexican favourites like pork burrito, three bean enchilada, and sizzling fajitas with either chicken, steak or broccoli, chickpea and sesame as fillings.
The taco selection features inventive ingredient combinations like slow cooked pork shoulder with grilled pineapple and fennel slaw, marinated steak with pickled red onions and feta, and pickled onion, cauliflower and roast beetroot on crispy tostadas with an almond and sesame crema.
The Basement desserts are classic favourites with a Mexican twist, like chocolate mousse with cherry, chilli compote and shortbread, and Margarita posset: tequila and lime set cream with caramelised chilli pineapple.
