Would go back to Smoke Stack

Lovely night so ate outside. Food was excellent, drinks were lovely. Service could have been better.

    Excellent value for money

Had lovely meal here on Friday. Sunny but windy and were offered option of sitting outside which we did. They had run out of one of the mains and we were offered a substitute, which I took advantage of. Hubby had prawns, fish and chips and banofee. I had chilli and nachos, salmon fish cake with lovely side salad and excellent ice cream. Wine included was so good we had an extra glass each. Staff attention was a nice level and water was given without asking. Would definitely go back and recommend.

Steakhouse and bar in Edinburgh city centre

A popular fixture on Edinburgh’s Broughton Street since the 1990s, Smoke Stack is a laidback steak house and bar. Stone walls, tiles, chunky wooden furniture and bare light bulbs give it a stripped back feel but the atmosphere is as warm and welcoming as you could wish for. On sunny days, the outside tables are popular for watching Broughton Street’s quirky street life.

Steaks, burgers and more

Smoke Stack likes to take top quality locally sourced produce and cook it simply. Steaks from John Gilmour Butchers take pride of place. They are dry-aged for at least 21 days and served with chips, green salad, mash or new potatoes. Burgers, hearty salads, fish & chips, fajitas and meaty sandwiches also demand attention. Moving away from the a la carte menu, Smoke Stack offers set daily menus, a breakfast selection and, at the weekends, a brunch/lunch menu. For dessert, brownies, banoffee pie and cheesecakes compete with a selection of splits and sundaes. Alongside a surprisingly extensive wine list, there are inventive cocktails and lots of beers, many of which are Scottish. Smoothies, shakes and floats offer non-alcoholic alternatives.

Broughton transport links and attractions

Smoke Stack is on Broughton Street in Edinburgh city centre. There is restricted on-street parking. Waverley train station is a five minute walk while the tram line and numerous bus routes are on nearby York Place. The Playhouse Theatre and Multrees Walk are also a five minute walk.
