Badger & Co is on Castle Street in the former home of Kenneth Grahame, the author of Wind in the Willows. This history plays a prominent part in the decor. Think Toad Hall’s padded leather seats, chandeliers and wood panelled walls. There are deer heads wearing wigs and a picture of a well dressed badger riding a penny farthing. It’s how a 21st century hipster might imagine an Edwardian gentleman’s club. As well as a private dining room, there are several intriguing nooks and crannies and a courtyard for al fresco drinks and dining.
From breakfast through lunch to dinner, the menus at Badger & Co are packed with ingredients which are sustainable, seasonal and locally sourced. It is hearty stuff: duck heart skewers with chimichurri or Finnan haddie pie with a herb mash crust. Lamb and chicken from the Borders make regular appearances as does whatever game is in season. There is always a selection of pies on offer along with grill section of steaks, chops and whole fish. The Sunday roast is always popular.
Badger & Co is on Castle Street in Edinburgh’s city centre. There is restricted on-street parking. Most of the city’s major bus routes and the tram line run along nearby Princes Street. Waverley train station is a ten minute walk. From the boutiques of George Street to the National Portrait Gallery, many of Edinburgh’s major attractions are a short stroll from Badger & Co.
