This cosy deli and cafe has a loyal clientele who appreciate the cooking and the ambience created by Sicily’s Dragotta family. Located on Crighton Street, Leith Walk, Gaia offers home-style Italian and Sicilian specialities. Many would nominate Gaia for the title of Edinburgh’s best coffee makers and the sofa by the window is a prime spot for sipping an espresso and watching the Walk’s reliably colourful street life.
Freshly made panini, toasted with oil and lemon, then topped with a wide range of delicious toppings are a speciality at Gaia. These range from a simple roasted ham, mozzarella and tomato combo to the Gaia house panini which packs in smoked ham and cheese, mozzarella and grilled aubergine. Deli platters, salads, soups and bruschetta add to Gaia’s attractions. Gaia’s daily pasta specials have many fervent fans. Each day, customers might be offered an old favourite like the lasagne or perhaps the linguine which is made to an old and closely guarded family recipe.
Gaia is on Crighton Place in the middle of Leith Walk. There are a number of excellent bus services to and from the city centre and restricted on-street parking. Waverley train station is a five minute taxi ride. Local attractions include Pilrig Park and Hibs football ground.
