A welcoming bar and restaurant on Edinburgh’s famous Rose Street, 1780 is popular with locals and visitors alike. A ten minute saunter from the capital’s theatre district, it is also extremely convenient for a refreshment stop during a raid on the city centre shops. The ever changing beer line-up – many of them from Scottish craft brewers – is chalked up on blackboards. The list makes particularly appealing reading for sun-kissed customers enjoying the outside seating area on Rose Street.
The menus at 1780 change regularly. What they always have at heart is a healthy respect for traditional Scottish dishes and a keen interest in ideas from elsewhere. This means you could have line-caught haddock and chips; haggis, neeps and tatties or a 21-day aged sirloin steak. More complex options might be the cauliflower croquette with pickled cauliflower purée and tarragon oil or the roasted supreme of corn-fed chicken with lemon thyme dauphinoise, buttery kale, smoked bacon lardons and a rich chicken gravy. A typical vegetarian dish might be the roasted garlic and wild mushroom risotto with toasted pine nuts, Parmesan, truffle oil and micro basil.
The tram line and several major bus routes run along nearby Princes Street and there is pay parking at Castle Terrace. Waverley train station is a brisk ten minute walk. The boutiques of George Street, Princes Street Gardens and the National Portrait Gallery are a short stroll.
