Four-star spa resort in the Trossachs

Overlooking Loch Ard and Ben Lomond, Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa has one of the best views in Scotland. Yet while the setting feels tranquil and remote, it is actually just 40 minutes from Glasgow.

The resort is surrounded by landscaped gardens and woodlands close to the village of Aberfoyle, not far from Queen Elizabeth Forest Park. As well as a leisure club there is also an activities centre with kayaking, mountain biking and abseiling.

Other facilities include the AA Rosette Garden restaurant, the bistro-style Rafters restaurant, a cinema room and a lounge bar with a crackling fireplace.

Enjoy a dip in the pool

At the hotel’s Vital leisure club, full-length windows offers unrivalled views of the loch and surrounding Trossachs.

You can bask in the 18-metre heated pool, relax on a poolside sun lounger, unwind in the Jacuzzi and then detox in either the sauna or steam room. Afterwards, why not treat yourself to a luxurious Elemis spa therapy?

And if you’re feeling active, you can also head to the state-of-the-art Technogym.

Luxury guest rooms and charming lodges

At Macdonald Forest Hills you have the choice of staying in a traditional guest room or self-catering lodge.

The 55 classically styled bedrooms boast decor inspired by the surrounding landscapes, such as heather-hued tweeds. All rooms are fully refurbished with comfy and luxurious touches for a great night’s sleep.

Features include a large relaxing bed, flat screen TV, tea & coffee making facilities, big desk, deluxe Elemis toiletries and a hairdryer.

Or you could stay in one of the 65 lodge apartments, many of which have their own private sauna and balcony. In the morning you can brew a delicious coffee in the Nespresso machine and sip it overlooking the loch — pure bliss.

Choice of two dining spots

The sleek, AA Rosette Garden Restaurant offers fine cuisine combined with panoramic views of the loch. Its modern Scottish menu showcases quality seasonal ingredients and is complemented by an impressive wine list.

Alternatively, you can enjoy more relaxed dining in Rafters Bar & Bistro with its wood panelling and splashes of tartan. The menu offers hearty British and Italian dishes for the whole family to enjoy.

The bar area of Rafters also has plenty of entertainment, including large screen sporting events, snooker, pool, air hockey and board games.

Explore Loch Ard and The Trossachs

Sir Walter Scott once called Loch Ard ‘an enchanting sheet of water’ and to this day, the loch still has its own special magic. In fact, with its crumbling castle, sculpture trails and wildlife, there are plenty of adventures to be had.

For instance, you could try kayaking in the hotel activity centre or enjoy a peaceful picnic and stroll by the water. Or if you fancy heading further afield, why not go hiking in the Cairngorms or enjoy family fun at Go Ape! in Queen Elizabeth Forest Park? Plus if you’re a golfer then the historic and hilly Aberfoyle course is nearby.

Or if shopping and a leisurely lunch is more your thing, then stylish Loch Lomond Shores is only a 40-minute drive away.
