Set in a former coaching inn dating back to the early 1800s, The Royal Dunkeld Hotel has been welcoming guests for over two centuries. The hotel is rustically decorated with flower baskets and is just a stroll away from both Dunkeld Cathedral and the River Tay. In 2020 it won a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.

Inside you will find two restaurants and a traditional bar with a fireplace, pool table and beer garden. The hotel is also eco-friendly and produces its own green energy.

Overall, it is a terrific base for exploring rural Perthshire and the Highlands. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are around a 90-minute drive away.

You will have your pick of two dining spots at The Royal Dunkeld Hotel — Larches Restaurant and Woodlands Bistro. With the hotel philosophy being ‘eat, drink and be merry’, whichever one you choose, it’s sure to be a cheerful experience.

Larches Restaurant offers a more traditional dining experience enhanced with atmospheric photos of Scottish landscapes. The decor in the relaxed, tartan-strewn Woodlands Bistro is a celebration of local wildlife and features animal wood carvings.

Both restaurants serve up a menu of fresh and local produce. Sample dishes include black pudding Scotch eggs; seared salmon roulade with mango salsa, and a choice of Royal Dunkeld Speciality Pie such as rich Scottish game.

The town’s cathedral is a 13th century gothic landmark, while other local attractions include the Loch of Lowes Wildlife Reserve; the Hermitage waterfall walk with its 18th century folly, Ossian’s Hall; and the famous Birnam Oak, a relic of the Birnam Wood mentioned in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

The city of Perth is a half hour drive away and you can reach the magnificent Tay Forest Park in around an hour, via Pitlochry.
