About The Dornoch Hotel

Highland castle hotel

Perched overlooking the Dornoch Firth in Sutherland, Dornoch Castle Hotel can trace its roots all the way back to the 13th century.

The surrounding Highland scenery makes it ideal for a restful escape. There are also plenty of pretty beaches to explore.

The hotel offers a walled garden, quality locally sourced dining from Chef Grant MacNicol and a cosy whisky bar with a fireplace. It also has its very own organic gin distillery, meaning you can enjoy an extremely local G&T in the bar.

Castle and Garden rooms

Guest rooms are either within the castle itself or in the bright and modern wing overlooking the walled gardens. Some rooms are decorated with cheerful splashes of tartan.

Superior rooms offer extras like fluffy bathrobes & slippers, chocolates to nibble on and sherry to sip. Deluxe rooms are in the oldest part of the castle and have dramatic four-poster beds for a real Scottish aristocrat experience.

Candlelit castle dining

Grant MacNicol at the Castle serves up cuisine crafted from first class Scottish produce, all in an intimate, candlelit setting. The restaurant has been freshly refurbished and overlooks the gardens.

All of Chef MacNicol’s seasonal menus have an interesting Mediterranean twist. Dishes include the ever-popular salmon made with the hotel’s own Dornoch gin, or venison loin from the nearby Tressady Estate.

Dessert highlights include a comforting, home-style sticky toffee pudding with basil ice cream or a cheese board featuring the best from Highland Fine Cheese in Tain.

In the warmer months, guests can enjoy al fresco dining in the walled garden. Or for a cosier experience, you can settle down to a relaxing meal in front of the open fire in the stone-walled whisky bar.

Explore Dornoch and Sutherland

While staying in the castle, you can enjoy all that this idyllic Sutherland setting has to offer. The town of Dornoch itself includes a 13th century cathedral, the Royal Dornoch golf course and, of course, the beautiful Firth with its harbour seals.

Glenmorangie Distillery is a short drive away, as is Dunrobin Castle with its fairytale turrets.
