Famed for its roaming ponies, South Uist has a whole lot more to offer beyond photogenic wildlife. You can explore it all while staying at the Polochar Inn, an atmospheric 18th century hideaway overlooking the water. It is only a short drive from Lochboisdale ferry port, which can be reached via Oban.

The inn dates back to around 1750 and still has many of its original features. The name ‘Polochar’ means ‘inlet of the stone’, due to the early Bronze Age standing stone across from the inn. At sunset, the setting has an almost timeless feel.

The restaurant offers fresh local seafood and stunning coastal scenery. After dinner you can relax in front of the lounge bar fireplace while gazing out at panoramic views of the Sound of Barra.

There is also a beer garden, games room with a pool table and TV room with a classic Chesterfield sofa.

All of the simple, restful rooms overlook the beach and have an ensuite bathroom.

Other facilities include a 32-inch TV, DVD player, free WiFi, tea & coffee making facilities, complimentary toiletries and a hairdryer. Extra blankets are provided for added cosiness.

South Uist is the second largest island in the Outer Hebrides. And with its powdery white beaches, crystal-clear waters and purple stretches of heather, it has an almost fairytale feel.

You can hike mountains filled with red deer, take a dolphin or whale watching boat tour and visit the ruins of Ormiclate Castle. Golfers can play a round at the historic Askernish Club, while wildlife lovers can try to spot golden eagles, red grouse and the rare corncrake. Loch Druidibeg is a restful National Nature Reserve where you can enjoy a picnic or a stroll.

The Uist Sculpture Trail gives you a chance to explore seven artworks across the island, plus you can take a creative souvenir home with you from Kildonan Museum and Crafts. Other sights include the birthplace of Scottish heroine Flora MacDonald and the Our Lady of the Isles statue.
