Description
Stylish hotel in Dundee
Hotel Indigo in Dundee was named the best hotel in Scotland by The Sunday Times, beating Gleneagles, the Old Course and other household names.
The Telegraph also gave it an overall score of 9/10, saying “Positive proof that chain hotels don’t have to be boring. There’s wit, there’s style, there’s comfort – and there’s a bare bricks bar/restaurant that’s straight out of Shoreditch.”
The Scotsman added to the plaudits, saying “an old jute mill, nearly 200 years old, has been given a remarkable makeover to become a boutique hotel which warmly embraces its previous life. It is a symbol of the city’s rich heritage, yet it also epitomises its new-found self confidence.”
Local references
There are references to Dundee’s history throughout Hotel Indigo from the Dundee Marmalade motif on bathroom tiles to the Beano comics welcoming you in the bedroom. Scenes from legendary video games Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto, both developed in Dundee, are displayed in the lobby.
The bedrooms have antique furnishings and bespoke fabrics, which reference the city’s historic linen trade, white tiled bathrooms, fast WiFi, fresh milk in the fridge and a Nespresso machine.
The hotel’s Daisy Tasker restaurant, named in tribute to a former mill worker who began working there aged 14 and organised the staff social gatherings, has become one of Dundee’s hippest hotspots, with a chic industrial style space serving bistro style dishes and locally inspired cocktails.
Thriving Dundee
There’s no doubt as to what is currently the most talked about hotspot in Scotland – it’s Dundee.
Since the V&A opened in autumn last year the city has garnered a firm place on the world’s cultural map, with the Lonely Planet naming it one of its top destinations in Europe, describing the city as thriving and creative with a “head-turning” urban redevelopment.
Of course locals have always known the city of jute jam and journalism, with its historic museums, cosy pubs and striking waterfront location, is an underrated gem of Scotland.
