Description

Situated just a mile over the border, the atmospheric Gretna Hall is actually the very first hotel in Scotland. Appropriately for its legendary romantic location, its white exterior even looks a little bit like a wedding cake.

Set in ten acres of landscaped grounds, Gretna Hall Hotel is the perfect base for exploring the Scottish Borders. The property’s roots actually stretch all the way back to 1710, when it was a family manor house and wedding venue for eloping couples.

Yet while the hotel is steeped in history, its public areas have recently been refurbished to give them a fresh new look. Facilities include a restaurant, bar and room service.

Elegant rooms

All of the 97 guest rooms at Gretna Hall Hotel are ensuite. A number have recently been refurbished.

Each stylish room has free WiFi, a flat screen TV, direct dial telephone, tea/coffee maker, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries. Room service is also available, should you fancy getting cosy and hiding yourselves away.

Family rooms and suites are also available.

Dining

The Head Chef at the hotel’s Anvil Restaurant & Bar works closely with local producers in the Scottish Borders and Cumbria to create dishes that give a real flavour of the area.

Typical starters might include the twice-baked Auld Reekie Cheese soufflé, the Scotch broth and the potted, slow-cooked beef.

Popular main courses include the steak and haggis pie, the lamb hot pot and the pearl barley & root vegetable risotto. The steaks in the grill section have many fans.

The dessert selection celebrates the best of Scotland and could feature the Drambuie & orange bread and butter pudding, the Dundee Marmalade Tart and the cloutie dumpling served with a dram.

Out & About

Gretna Hall Hotel is of course set in one of the world’s most romantic villages. You can learn more about the history of the area by visiting The Gretna Green Story Experience and the famous blacksmith’s anvil. If shopping is more your thing, then the nearby Gretna Outlet Centre can provide happy hunting for souvenirs.

The hotel is also the perfect base for exploring the rest of the Scottish Borders, including visitor highlights like Hadrian’s Wall, Abbotsford House and Jedburgh Castle. The Lake District National Park is just over a half hour drive away.
